On-the-run UK resident falsely claimed welfare payments

Summary

A 35-year-old man who fled the UK while on temporary release from prison and used a false name to claim social protection payments in Ireland has been jailed for two years. Nasser Hussein had residency in the UK and came to Dublin, where he used a false name to secure a social protection card, allowing him to claim €5,913 in payments. The court accepted that he used the false name to cover up his UK status. Hussein has 21 previous convictions, including six for robbery. He was arrested in February 2025 and entered a guilty plea in March 2024. The prosecution said gardaí found documents in his rucksack confirming his true identity. The defence claimed he came to Ireland to find work to support his family in the UK and used the false name after being advised by someone he met. The judge said Hussein had no entitlement to be in Ireland and took money from people who could legitimately claim it.
