Summary
The son of veteran criminal Eamon Kelly, who was shot dead over a decade ago, attempted to murder his former wife's friend, blaming her for the breakup of his marriage, the Central Criminal Court heard. Matthias Kelly (42) suffered a brain injury in 2016 and another head injury in a fall two days before the attack on Fiona Timmermans. His lawyers argued that a neuropsychologist report is needed to assess how his injuries affected his behavior, but none are willing to work for the legal aid rate. The judge requested the Minister for Justice to address the issue and adjourned the sentencing until February 16. Kelly sent threatening messages to Ms Timmermans before breaking into her home and attempting to stab her. She fought back and sustained serious injuries, but survived. Kelly expressed remorse and claimed he was not in his right frame of mind at the time. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other charges.
