A Canadian drugs mule, Mohamad Alaha (20), was jailed for three years after being caught 'literally red-handed' with €400,000 worth of vacuum-packed cannabis at Dublin Airport. To settle his debts, Alaha sold personal items and eventually agreed to transport drugs. His defence argued that his choices were limited. Judge Orla Crowe acknowledged his guilty plea and noted that drug trafficking is a societal scourge. She accepted that Alaha was cooperating and had been doing well in custody, but sentenced him to three years in prison, backdated to the day of his arrest.
