Californian gambling addict caught trying to smuggle €300k through airport

A Californian gambling addict has been jailed for four years after being caught trying to smuggle nearly €300,000 worth of cannabis through Dublin airport. Jacob Napolitano (28) arrived in Ireland on an Aer Lingus flight from Los Angeles last May when a customs officer became suspicious of his behaviour. An X-ray scan of his bags revealed multiple vacuum-packed packages containing cannabis, with a total weight of just over 17 kilos. The estimated street value of the drugs was €288,842. Napolitano pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful importation of a controlled substance. He told gardai that he had a gambling problem and had accrued a US$10,000 debt. He claimed he did not pack the bag but knew it contained cannabis. His defence highlighted that he came from a good family and that his parents and siblings had travelled from California for the sentence hearing.
