Woman guilty of assaulting stroke victim during aggravated burglary
Summary
Grace Tormey, aged 22, was remanded in custody after a jury found her guilty of assaulting Lisa Lee, a partially paralysed woman who had suffered a stroke, during an aggravated burglary at Rollins Villas, Sallynoggin, on 16 November 2012. Lee reported that she awoke to hear banging on her front door and that she and her partner, Jason Kelly, had barricaded themselves in an upstairs bedroom. Tormey and an unidentified man forced entry, and the attackers entered the bedroom, kicking and punching Lee, who was lying on the ground due to her paralysis. Lee claimed that Tormey smashed a wine bottle over her head, kicked, punched and pulled hair. Gardaí found Tormey "apparently attending" to Lee's wounds, but she denied burglary and claimed she had come to help. After a four‑day trial and 1½ hours of deliberation, a jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict. Grace Tormey pleaded not guilty.
