Burglar with Dublin bombings PTSD gets suspended sentence

Summary

Thomas Thompson, aged 59, was given a suspended two‑year sentence for burglary after entering a Dollymount house through an unlocked back door. He had rung the bell and asked to speak to the homeowner, but the teenage son, who was in a back room, told him the woman was asleep. A scuffle ensued when the son tried to remove Thompson from the house. Thompson claimed he had a knife, but no weapon was found, and the victim believed none existed. The homeowner's mother later confronted Thompson, who called her a "rat." Thompson had previously been reported for disturbances near the home. He pleaded guilty to burglary on 19 May 2024, has 28 prior convictions, and the court noted his PTSD diagnosis from the 1970s Dublin bombings. Judge Martin Nolan suspended the sentence on the condition that Thompson stay at least one kilometre from the victim's home.
