Summary

James Mahon, a 47‑year‑old Dublin father of six, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to failing to file tax returns for 2003, 2008 and 2009. He had received €3.3 million from Dolianus Enterprises Ltd between 2003 and 2009 to distribute free newspapers around Dublin. Revenue said Mahon owed €869,731 in unpaid tax, excluding interest and penalties, and that he had not been registered for income tax since 1991. Bank records showed €1.9 million moved through his Bank of Ireland and EBS accounts, but the balance of the €3.3 million was unknown. Mahon claimed he earned about €400 a week, but a 2011 audit found payments of €384,342 in 2006 and €478,713 in 2008. He had no prior convictions. The court remanded him on bail until 15 February, when his sentence will be finalised.
