Former GAA coach convicted of possessing €5,000 in cannabis herb

Summary

David Gill, a 40‑year‑old former GAA youth coach and father of three from The Pines, Leopardstown Road, Dublin, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possessing €5,000 of cannabis herb seized in a Tipperary drug bust. The court heard that Gill's fingerprints were found on a bag of the seized cannabis, but he denied any link to the people involved in the operation. Sergeant David Buckley confirmed that Gill had no connection to the targets of the Garda operation and that the package would have passed through his hands while he was involved in transporting drugs in Dublin. Gill has three prior convictions, including a seven‑year sentence for possessing almost €600,000 of cannabis in August 2013. The judge, recognising his cooperation and efforts to improve while incarcerated, imposed a two‑year sentence to run concurrently with the seven years he is already serving.
