Judge warns it's a criminal offence not to pay employee during jury service
Summary
At the Central Criminal Court on 19 January 2016, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy warned a head‑lice removal company that failing to pay an employee during her jury service was a criminal offence, exposing the firm to unlimited fines and prison. The employee, sworn to serve on a three‑day sexual‑assault trial, said her employers would not pay her and feared replacement. She was one of only two people able to operate a specific machine. The judge offered her the option to excuse herself if she was very concerned, but she chose to serve.
