Migrant worker denied council home loans loses equality claim against housing minister

Summary

A migrant worker has vowed to appeal after the Workplace Relations Commission dismissed his discrimination complaint against the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage regarding the Local Authority Home Loan Scheme. Aloke Tirawy alleged he faced unlawful discrimination based on his non-EU nationality when Mayo County Council and Meath County Council rejected three mortgage applications in 2024. Though Mr Tirawy met eligibility criteria including a five-year residency requirement, the Housing Agency declined his applications citing a 2023 credit policy not publicly available.
