Former couple to be sentenced over "frenzied" late night Luas assault

Summary

In a late‑night Luas incident on 11 December 2014, 24‑year‑old Aoife Molloy and 25‑year‑old Martin O'Connor, from South Circular Road and Elmdale Park respectively, assaulted Noel O'Rourke, a 46‑year‑old passenger. The pair claimed they "snapped" after O'Rourke retaliated when Molloy kicked him as he tried to stand after slipping. Molloy and O'Connor struck O'Rourke with a Budweiser bottle, smashing it and striking him three times on the head and once on the lip. O'Rourke suffered a fractured eye socket, scalp and lip wounds, and lasting scarring to the back of his head. CCTV and DNA from the bottles identified the attackers. Both pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, violent disorder and production of a bottle. They have expressed remorse and requested community service or probation. The case was adjourned for sentencing.
