Summary
Charlotte O'Regan, a former receptionist at Gaffney Solicitors, won a tribunal order for unpaid wages of €830.73 gross after her employer, David Gaffney, closed his office and terminated her on 3 May 2024. Gaffney sent a letter on 26 April 2024 offering statutory redundancy and annual leave entitlements, but no payment materialised. O'Regan claimed €873.73 in unpaid wages and, after six months of financial hardship, wrote to Gaffney again. The Workplace Relations Commission found no defence from Gaffney. Adjudicator Patsy Doyle ordered the payment of €870.73 gross, covering three days' work and a week's pay in lieu of notice, after statutory deductions. The decision noted deteriorating WhatsApp communication and that O'Regan had kept office keys to strengthen her claim. This case follows a similar successful claim by former secretary Leona Erangey for €4,687.
