Community Service for man who tried to sell stolen car to gardai

Summary

Gavin Walsh, 26, a father of one, was ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service instead of a two‑year prison term after pleading guilty to possession of a stolen Ford Focus in County Dublin. The car, stolen from a tow truck in Santry on 15 January 2014, had been advertised for sale on Done Deal and was recovered by undercover Gardaí. Walsh attempted to sell the vehicle to the Gardaí, who discovered the plates and discs had been cloned. He was also linked to a second stolen Audi A4, which had been bought with a fake bank draft and similarly advertised for sale; that vehicle was also returned to its owners. Walsh had six prior convictions for minor road traffic and public order offences. His defence argued that he had recently become a father, was employed, and intended to become a registered carer for his parents.
