€145k unfair dismissal award for accountant dismissed without cause

Summary

Maria Inmaculada De La Torre Ruiz, an accountant with Hamilton UK Services Ltd, secured a €145,122 unfair dismissal award from the Workplace Relations Commission. She had worked there from 6 July 2021, earning €63,000 a year and receiving pay rises of over €15,500. Her dismissal on 27 July 2023 was "without cause" and the employer refused to give a reason, which the WRC said severely harmed her future job prospects. The award, capped at two years of total remuneration, covered salary, pension contributions, professional fees and training costs. Ms De La Torre Ruiz had lost €57,151 between dismissal and a nine‑month contract in 2024, and an additional €23,661 until the January 2025 hearing. The adjudicator estimated her prospective loss at €108,841, but limited the award to the statutory maximum of €145,122.
