'Menace' jailed for making 11,000 nuisance calls to emergency services

Summary

William Greene, 48, of Bective Square, Phibsborough, was jailed for 16 months after making 11,043 nuisance calls to emergency services between 8 March and 9 November 2023, jamming lines for 129 hours. He pleaded guilty to two counts of persistently using the telecommunications system to cause annoyance, interference or needless anxiety. The calls, made from two phone numbers, were monitored and linked to Greene, who was arrested in October 2023. He denied owning the phones but was found with a Nokia mobile and a second phone during searches. Greene had a suspended sentence for giving false information in a hoax 999 call and 20 prior convictions. The court noted his alcohol addiction and mental health issues, and he was sentenced to three years with the final 20 months suspended on bond.
