Four years in prison for man with "great expectations"

Paulius Baltrunas, a 35‑year‑old Lithuanian national with no fixed abode, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to transporting more than €160,000 worth of cannabis for sale or supply at Fonthill Retail Park on 18 May 2024. Baltrunas had arrived in Ireland three months earlier with the intention of establishing a vape business, but that plan failed. Gardaí were alerted to suspicious activity in the area and observed Baltrunas at a service station in Fonthill Retail Park. They searched him and his vehicle, finding a strong odor of cannabis and a large shopping bag containing the drugs. The Gardaí reported that no further evidence emerged from Baltrunas's subsequent interview. Judge Martin Nolan, noting that Baltrunas had come to Ireland "with great expectations" that were not realised, inferred from the evidence that he intended to transport the drugs for payment and imposed the four‑year custodial sentence.
