Drug addict died from single stab wound to the chest, State Pathologist tells trial

Summary

In a murder trial, the State Pathologist, Professor Marie Cassidy, testified that James Humphries, aged 32, died from a single stab wound to his upper chest, located 1.5 cm below the collarbone. The wound was 2 cm wide, 0.8 cm gaping, and 5 cm deep, puncturing the right subclavian artery and vein but not entering the chest cavity or organs. Humphries had high alcohol levels and therapeutic levels of heroin, methadone, and diazepam, which did not contribute to his death. Cassidy described the knife as having a fairly narrow blade with a short tip, and the injury was deemed a fatal knife assault. Trevor Corr, 39, pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter; the State did not accept the plea. The trial continues.
