Summary

During a trial in the Central Criminal Court, a 34‑year‑old Pakistani man was accused of raping a woman with Down syndrome at his Dublin home on 12 June 2013. He pleaded not guilty to rape, sexual assault and having sex with a mentally impaired person. Defence psychologist Dr Rioghnach O'Leary testified that the accused ranks in the bottom three percent of the population in cognitive functioning, with an overall IQ of 73, and that he would have difficulty adapting to social norms.
