Witness surprised to hear of complainant's 'brainwashing' allegation

Summary

During the trial, a family friend of the accused woman, who described herself as an "honorary aunt" to the complainant, testified that she was surprised when the complainant told a counsellor that she and her sister were "brainwashing" and exerting "coercive control" over the complainant. The witness said she had spent time in the accused's home as a teenager, describing a household with no boundaries, many rules, and heavy alcohol consumption. She confirmed that the complainant had lived with her and her sister as an older teenager and that the environment was "toxic" and "unbearable." The witness also stated that she had encouraged the complainant to seek counselling and that she and her sister had no knowledge of any allegations against the complainant's mother at that time. The trial is proceeding before Justice Melanie Greally and a jury. The unnamed accused pleaded not guilty.
