Summary
A 34‑year‑old mother of seven was sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment for the very serious neglect of six of her children, who were left in a filthy, rubbish‑strewn and freezing cold house for four years. The children, aged between eight years and 10 months at the time of removal, were taken into State care in January 2020 after repeated Garda visits from July 2019. The court heard that the house was in the worst condition the investigating Garda had ever seen, with rubbish on floors, a mouse in the kitchen, a dirty mattress and a cold environment. The mother pleaded guilty to child neglect for the period 2016 to January 2020. She had no prior convictions and was arrested in late 2021, but no evidence was obtained from her Garda interviews. The sentence was imposed as a custodial term, with no suspended portion, to punish the neglect and provide general deterrence.
