Summary

In a Dublin court on 9 December 2015, a 34‑year‑old Pakistani man accused of raping a woman with Down syndrome pleaded not guilty to rape, sexual assault and having sex with a mentally impaired person. He testified that in his home country mentally disabled people are kept at home or in hospitals and that he was unaware the woman was mentally impaired. He claimed the alleged victim enjoyed the sexual activity, describing how they met on the street, went to his house, kissed, undressed and engaged in sexual acts for about twenty minutes before she left. He said he had no limit to the number of women he approached and that he had "success" with many. The jury heard from 16 women who said the accused approached them on the street. The trial will continue tomorrow before Mr Justice Tony Hunt and a jury of six men and six women.
