Criminal who tried to blackmail and steal from brain-injured victim is jailed

Summary

Dean Kelly, 37, was sentenced to 27 months in prison after pleading guilty to attempted theft of a man with an acquired brain injury. On 16 September 2022, Kelly called the victim's home, calling him a "kiddie fiddler" and threatening to release naked photographs unless the victim gave him cash. He then accompanied the victim to an ATM, urging him to withdraw €40, but tried to withdraw an additional €700. The victim managed to recover his card and alerted the Gardaí. Kelly had a history of 65 theft and fraud convictions, plus robbery and handling stolen property. He is currently serving a sentence for theft and is due for release in November. The judge noted Kelly's long offending history but also his positive behaviour in prison, and imposed a 27‑month term.
