In a hearing before the Central Criminal Court, grieving mother Audrey Mahon, aged 44, pleaded with Justice Margaret Heneghan for her husband David Mahon's permission to travel to Portugal with her for two weeks. David Mahon, also 44, is charged with the murder of his 23‑year‑old son, Dean Fitzpatrick, who was killed on 26 May 2013 at Northern Cross on Dublin's Malahide Road. The trial is scheduled to begin in April 2016. Mahon's wife, who has suffered mental health problems since her daughter Amy disappeared in Spain eight years ago, said a psychiatrist had recommended a trip to Portugal to rest and relax. She explained that she has been drinking heavily and self‑harming while searching for Amy, and that she is on anti‑depressants, Xanax, and sleeping tablets. She also has chronic liver disease.
