Summary

Aisha Ahmed, 49, also known as Gloria Anwulika Aro, was arrested in Tallaght, Dublin, under a European Arrest Warrant issued by Italy. The warrant accuses her of acting as promoter, leader and organiser of an association that imported, sold, distributed and traded large quantities of cocaine in Italy between September 1999 and June 2000. She was sentenced in absentia to 20 years' imprisonment. At her bail hearing, Ahmed denied being known as Aisha Ahmed or by the alias Linda, and denied using a 1965 birth date, although she had supplied an Irish passport with a December 1967 birth date. Her counsel, John Noonan BL, argued that she had not been notified of a scheduled trial and that the Italian authorities had released her without further proceedings. The Irish judge, Aileen Donnelly, will decide whether to surrender her to Italy. The case remains pending.
