Summary

Alan Stone, 33, was sentenced to 16 months' imprisonment after a series of thefts and a bizarre act of defecation in a Garda interview room. During questioning on 28 April 2015, Stone repeatedly insisted he needed to use the toilet, was offered escort to his cell, but instead he pulled down his trousers, squatted in the corner of the interview room and defecated, wiping himself with a seal from the interview video tapes. The incident prompted the Garda to clear the room for health and safety reasons and the interview was terminated. Stone also pleaded guilty to stealing two boxes of Fairy Liquid tablets from Centra, Dame Street, and was found to have 165 prior convictions, mainly for theft. The judge noted the unusual nature of the act and suggested that abstaining from drugs could improve his prospects of reform. The case highlighted the extent of Stone's heroin addiction and the impact of his criminal behaviour on the Garda station.
