'She is inside covered in blood,' woman accused of murdering mother told gardai

Summary

During the opening of the Central Criminal Court trial, Moire Bergin, 47, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for the murder of her 76‑year‑old mother, Mary Bergin, on 13 April 2022. The prosecution and defence agreed that Moire suffered from a bipolar disorder at the time of the killing. Evidence presented included the discovery of two knives at the scene, one with the deceased's DNA, and a post‑mortem by State Pathologist Dr Heidi Okkers revealing stab wounds to the neck and forehead and defensive injuries to the forearms. CCTV footage showed Moire leaving the house in a dressing gown at 4.37 am, later seen genuflecting and lying on the ground. A 999 call had been made by Mary at 2.22 am for an ambulance for her naked daughter. Garda reports described Moire as highly distressed, naked and covered in blood, and she repeatedly claimed she had killed her mother.
