Fraudster who took €30k from international students is jailed
Summary
Raul Rodriguez Ramirez, 36, was convicted of fraud for taking €29,042 from 18 international students who had paid for language courses in Dublin. He used the money to invest in a restaurant that failed during the pandemic, instead of enrolling the students. The students suffered financial loss, psychological distress, and some had to sleep in a church doorway or could not travel home. Ramirez pleaded guilty and paid €18,050 as a token of remorse. Judge Orla Crowe sentenced him to 18 months in prison on each count, to run concurrently, and suspended the final nine months for two years.
