Limerick man jailed for 12.5 years for repeated rape of woman in her own home
Summary
In a brutal case, Alan Hanley, aged 34, was sentenced to 12½ years' imprisonment for punching, kicking and repeatedly raping a woman in her own home on 4–5 May 2012. The assault began when Hanley entered the victim's house, beat her, tore her clothes off and raped her on a rug. He dragged her into a shower, turned it on, and raped her again, then dragged her downstairs for a third rape. After the third assault he ejaculated, burned pieces of the rug and her clothing, and threatened to destroy evidence. Hanley pleaded not guilty to three rape charges and an assault charge; a jury found him guilty on all counts. The judge imposed the maximum five‑year sentence for the assault and 12½ years for each rape, with all terms running concurrently from May 2012. Hanley had prior violent convictions, including knife possession and intimidation of a witness.
