Revenue Inspector doesn't know if 'Slab' Murphy signed grant application
Summary
The trial of Thomas Murphy, 66, of Ballybinaby, Hackballscross, Co Louth, continued at the Special Criminal Court. Mr Murphy, a prominent republican, has pleaded not guilty to nine charges alleging that he failed to furnish a return of his income, profits or gains or the source of his income, profits or gains to the Collector General or the Inspector of Taxes for the years 1996/97 to 2004. The prosecution is proceeding on foot of an investigation by the Criminal Assets Bureau. During cross-examination, a Revenue Inspector, who cannot be named for legal reasons, testified that he does not know if the signature on farming grant applications belongs to Mr Murphy. The defence, represented by John Kearney QC, claims that Mr Murphy's brother managed the accused man's cattle herd and farming activities. The prosecution's case is that, although Mr Murphy conducted significant dealings in relation to cattle and land and received farming grants from the Department of Agriculture, he failed to make any returns to revenue. The witness agreed with the defence that if Mr Murphy signed the forms, it would mean he was the farmer of the herd, but confirmed he does not know whether Mr Murphy actually signed the documents. The matter was adjourned and the trial continues.
