Jail for Malaysian man who smuggled two women into country

Summary

Tie Yuen Seng, a 46‑year‑old Malaysian man with no fixed abode, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two years in prison for smuggling two women into Ireland and for possessing fraudulent travel documents. He pleaded guilty to two counts of people smuggling and two counts of possessing fraudulent documents. On 2 September 2023, Seng arrived at Dublin Airport from Italy, claiming he was on holiday. Immigration officers searched his bags and found two Taiwanese passports that matched the two women who had travelled on the same flight and who presented at immigration control claiming no documentation and seeking asylum. Seng admitted he was paid to transport the women and that he had been offered a job in an Irish factory in return. He said he had fled Malaysia after a criminal gang pressured him and his sister, and had lived illegally in Italy for several years.
