Drunk, banned driver who drove into group in racially motivated incident is jailed
Summary
Darren Mulholland, 39, was jailed for three and a half years after driving a Ford Focus into a group of Indian and Pakistani men on School Road, Finglas, on 18 November 2019. The car struck one man, carrying him on the bonnet for five to ten metres before the vehicle crossed the green and left the scene. Mulholland, who was intoxicated and had been disqualified from driving for 15 years, pleaded guilty to endangerment and driving without insurance. Dashcam footage and a victim impact statement showed the injured party suffering soft‑tissue injuries and ongoing health problems attributed to the incident. The court found the attack was racially motivated and imposed the sentence, also extending Mulholland's driving disqualification to six years. The judge noted his addiction and mental‑health issues but considered them mitigating factors. The case was prosecuted by Diana Stuart BL and defended by Derek Cooney BL.
