Dublin man found not guilty of trying to murder his 91-year-old grandmother by reason of insanity

In a Central Criminal Court hearing on 6 November 2015, 34‑year‑old Eoghan O'Mahoney of Killester was found not guilty by reason of insanity for an attempted murder of his 91‑year‑old grandmother, Catherine McGillion, on 19 December 2013. O'Mahoney, who suffers from schizophrenia, attacked his grandmother with a knife during a psychotic episode, cutting the left side of her neck and striking her several times. The jury, after about 30 minutes, accepted the defence plea of insanity, noting that the prosecution had not contested it. McGillion, who described O'Mahoney as "the person he loves most in the world," testified that the attack was out of character and that she and her grandson had a close relationship. O'Mahoney's brother, Conor, intervened and called emergency services. The verdict was unanimous, and O'Mahoney is scheduled for further assessment on 16 November.
