Colm Murphy's son moves to appeal conviction for explosives possession
Summary
Conan Murphy, aged 28 and son of Colm Murphy, who was convicted of the 1998 Omagh bombing but later cleared, has filed an appeal against his own conviction for explosives offences. In March 2012, the Special Criminal Court sentenced him to eight and a half years' imprisonment after finding him guilty of possessing explosive substances at Aghaboys, Mount Pleasant, on 22 May 2010. His co‑accused, Philip McKevitt, 60, received the same sentence for the same offence committed at his home on the same date. The trial, which began in December 2011, revealed that Gardaí raided McKevitt's home and discovered an "adaptive" advertising trailer built to conceal two gas containers that had been modified to explode. The device, advertising "FlogTheLot.ie", was said to contain about 500 lb of explosive mix, capable of causing death and destruction comparable to the 1998 bombing.
