Man caught by sting operation after trying to sell stolen car to undercover gardai, court hears

Summary

Gavin Walsh, 26, of Carnlough Road, Cabra, Dublin, pleaded guilty at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of a stolen Ford Focus in County Dublin on 18 January 2014. The car had been stolen from the back of a tow truck in Santry on 15 January 2014 and was advertised for sale on Done Deal. Garda David Scanlon set up a sting operation after the advertisement; Walsh arrived driving the car and attempted to sell it to undercover gardai. The Focus, with cloned plates and discs, was recovered and returned to its owners. Gardai also linked Walsh to a second vehicle, an Audi A4, which had been bought from its true owner with a fake bank draft, fitted with cloned plates and advertised on Done Deal; that car was likewise recovered. Walsh, who has six previous convictions for minor road‑traffic and public‑order offences, was arrested and searched at his home.
