Forensic accountant tells trial that seized ledger is record of expenditure by Tom Murphy
Summary
During the Special Criminal Court trial of Thomas "Slab" Murphy, a forensic accountant from the Criminal Assets Bureau testified that a ledger seized from a shed on the Northern Ireland border is a record of Murphy's expenditure. The accountant, who cannot be named, had previously examined the ledger, cheques and cheque books seized in 2006. He described the ledger as "not the normal type of records one would encounter" and referred to it as the "loan book." The accountant cross‑referenced entries with a bank account opened in Murphy's name and agreed that an entry labelled "milk bill" was a payment of a milk bill, not a loan of milk. He denied that the ledger recorded loans from Patrick Murphy to Thomas Murphy and rejected the suggestion that the bank account was used for such loans. The trial will resume on Tuesday. Thomas Murphy pleaded not guilty.
