Jury convicts men of raping teenage girl (17) in hotel car park

Summary

A Central Criminal Court jury has convicted two men of raping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl in a hotel car park in Leinster in December 2017. The first defendant, aged 25, pleaded not guilty to rape, oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. The second defendant, aged 24, pleaded not guilty to rape and oral rape. The State alleged the then 17-year-old victim was assaulted by the men, who were aged 17 and 18 at the time, after going for a drive with them. This was the second trial in the case, following a hung jury in 2023. After seven and a half hours of deliberation, the jury convicted the 25-year-old of all charges against him. The 24-year-old was convicted of oral rape, while the jury indicated it was not in a position to reach a verdict on the rape charge against him. Both defendants broke down in tears as the verdicts were read. They were remanded in custody pending sentence on April 22 next, when a victim impact report will be submitted to the court. Ms Justice Eileen Creedon thanked the jury for their time.
