AI start-up must pay former exec €10k over illegal wage cuts

Summary

The former chief technical officer of Altada, Denis Canty, obtained a €10,238.01 award from the Workplace Relations Commission for an illegal 22.5% wage deduction that began in July 2022 and continued until October 2022. Canty claimed the deduction from his €125,000‑a‑year salary after the company was put on layoff in July and later entered receivership on 4 November 2022. He resigned three weeks later. Canty's claim was filed after the receivership process had begun, and although the initial six‑month deadline had passed, the adjudicator accepted his claim as within an extended period due to the "storm and stress" of the receivership. The commission declined to consider a separate €39,000 claim for an unpaid bonus, as it was not included in the original statutory complaint. Canty's award follows a similar compensation of €24,262 awarded to former Altada executive Graham Baitson.
