Summary

Shane Cooney, aged 33, of St Anthony's Road, Rialto, Dublin, pleaded guilty to a robbery and a vicious, unprovoked attack on a neighbour on 17 July 2023. The victim was sitting outside his house drinking coffee when Cooney demanded his phone, then pulled him to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched him. Cooney smashed the victim's phone, urinated on the front of the house and fled. The victim suffered psychological consequences, was afraid to leave his house, and temporarily relocated with his wife. Cooney, who has 117 previous convictions including robbery, attempted robbery and assault, was arrested at the scene and brought to Kilmainham Garda Station. Judge Patricia Ryan sentenced him to six years' imprisonment, suspending the final year on strict conditions, and backdated the sentence to 18 July 2023.
