Adrianne St Clair, a 25‑year‑old US woman, was arrested on 22 December after a customs sniffer dog detected over 22 kg of cannabis in two large suitcases she carried from Los Angeles. She had been paid €5 000 to transport the suitcases, which she claimed contained clothing, to London Gatwick Airport. St Clair admitted possessing €460 880 worth of cannabis on the date in question and pleaded guilty at the District Court. She has no prior convictions. Her defence counsel described her as naive and vulnerable, citing her deep‑seated Christian faith as a factor that made her trust others. The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, hearing the case on 8 February, found her culpability to be recklessness rather than actual knowledge and sentenced her to three and a half years' imprisonment, back‑dated to her arrest.
