Academic allegedly found asleep in underwear has racist discrimination claim thrown out
Summary
In a January 2024 decision, the Workplace Relations Commission dismissed a series of discrimination claims lodged by Dr Pierce Parker, an American academic of Asian origin who had pursued a PhD at University College Dublin (UCD). Parker alleged that UCD had discriminated against him on the grounds of race, gender and civil status after he was disciplined for sleeping in campus buildings and after a post‑doctoral fellowship was not awarded to him. He claimed that the university's disciplinary process was racially motivated and that staff had "blindly" ignored his sleeping and cooking in the research institute from 2018 to 2021. The WRC found that Parker's complaints were made in bad faith, that he had a pattern of retaliating with allegations of discrimination, and that the university had acted fairly and transparently in the fellowship selection. Consequently, the WRC ruled the claims frivolous and dismissed them, noting that the allegations caused Parker undue stress and anxiety.
