Cash-in-transit driver to be sentenced over €30,000 theft
Summary
Damien Carrig, 35, a father of four from Oakpark Drive, Santry, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to stealing €30,000 from Sonoma Valley Limited, a subsidiary of GSLS, on 24 December 2014. He claimed he was under severe pressure from a gang and was paid €2,500 for the theft. Carrig had 10 prior convictions, including two thefts in 1998 and 1999, and various traffic and public‑order offences. Judge Martin Nolan remanded him on continuing bail for sentencing tomorrow. Detective Garda Jason Weir and defence solicitor Nicola Cox agreed the offence was out of character and that Carrig was under duress. Carrig had not recovered the cash, which was never found, and the security company later refunded Dunnes Stores. He had lost his job but had since secured new employment.
