James Flynn, aged 32, was sentenced to eight years in prison for conspiring to steal a Volkswagen Passat that was used as the getaway vehicle in the 2013 Lordship Credit Union robbery in Bellurgan, Co. Louth. The Special Criminal Court, presided over by Mr Justice Tony Hunt, found that Flynn knew the full purpose of the conspiracy and that the theft of the Passat was an integral part of the robbery plan. Although Flynn was acquitted of direct participation in the robbery itself, the court convicted him of conspiracy to steal the Passat. The judge set a headline sentence of nine years, reduced to eight after considering mitigating factors such as family testimonials, and backdated the sentence to 15 July 2021 when Flynn entered custody in the UK pending extradition. Flynn had previously fled Ireland and was extradited from the UK in April 2022.
