Georgian man warned dentist he had 10 days to leave Ireland or pay protection money, court hears
Summary
In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing, Archili Mindadze, a 40‑year‑old Georgian business owner, was found guilty of assaulting Romanian dentist Iurii Borta on 1 October 2012. Mindadze and a co‑accused entered Borta's surgery at Griffith Hall, Griffith Avenue, and threatened the dentist with a knife, demanding he pay protection money or leave Ireland within ten days. Mindadze sliced the dentist's hand and struck him in the face. He was arrested on 12 October 2012 after the co‑accused fled. A knife recovered from Mindadze's kitchen matched the DNA of the injured party. Mindadze pleaded guilty, denied using the knife or force, and claimed PTSD from his past. The court ordered a Probation and Welfare Services Report and remanded him in custody pending sentencing. The dentist suffered scarring and numbness on his left hand, and reported nervousness and anxiety following the attack. The case was prosecuted by Fiona Murphy BL and defended by Marc Thompson BL.
