High Court clears way for man's fourth trial on alleged sex offences
Summary
The High Court has authorised a man to be tried for the fourth time on 14 counts of rape and sexual assault alleged to have occurred in the late 1960s and 1970s. The man, whose identity is withheld for legal reasons, denies all allegations. He was first tried in 2012 before the Central Criminal Court, where the jury could not reach a verdict. A fourth trial date was set, but the man sought judicial review to stop it, arguing that a fourth trial breached his rights under the European Convention on Human Rights and that a failure by the State to fully disclose had undermined his confidence in the process.
