Pair's violent attack on New Year's day left victim with serious brain injuries
Summary
On New Year's Day 2023, two homeless men, Jordan Maguire (24) and Shane McGrane (38), attacked a man at the corner of Aston Quay and Price's Lane in Dublin city centre. The victim was kicked in the head, left unconscious and bleeding, and later required a craniotomy to remove part of his skull. He lost three pints of blood, received 96 staples, and now suffers a significant skull depression, memory problems, slurred speech and difficulty sleeping. Gardaí found the victim at 12:30 pm and transported him to St James' Hospital and then Beaumont Hospital for emergency neurosurgery. CCTV footage showed the attackers changing clothes after the assault. Both men pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm. The case was heard in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, with the judge adjourned the matter for finalisation on 9 November. The court heard that the victim's long‑term injuries have affected his employment and personal life.
