Summary
In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing, Ceraldo Eyken, 45, of Chaplin Court, Clondalkin, denied assault causing harm to prison officer Gareth Sheeran, 36, at Cloverhill Prison on 11 April 2009. Eyken was accused of slashing a meal tray over Sheeran's wrist, severing a tendon and causing permanent nerve damage that left Sheeran with a constant tingling sensation. Sheeran, who received 19 stitches and plastic surgery, testified that he was caught in the middle of an altercation when Eyken, after being pushed down the stairs by another prisoner, used the tray as a weapon. Eyken claimed he was defending himself after being shoved and that he would never hit an officer, expressing remorse. The trial, presided over by Judge Sarah Berkeley with a jury of eight women and four men, was set to conclude within the next day or two.
