Tom O'Gorman's killer committed to Central Mental Hospital
Summary
The court heard that Tom O'Gorman, a 39‑year‑old Dublin man, was killed by his tenant, Saverio Bellante, in Castleknock between 11 and 12 January 2014. Bellante, aged 36, admitted the killing and that he had eaten what he believed to be part of O'Gorman's heart. A jury found him not guilty of murder by reason of insanity after deliberating 1 hour 36 minutes. The judge, after hearing from psychiatrists, ordered Bellante to be committed to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum. Bellante has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and has shown improvement but remains at risk. The order will keep him under treatment and supervision, with his plan reviewed every six months. The case ends with Bellante's commitment rather than a custodial sentence. Saverio Bellante was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
