Jail for man (54) caught in child sex exploitation sting
Summary
A 54‑year‑old man from Boyerstown, Navan, was jailed for 18 months after a sting operation by an online vigilante group exposed his attempts to sexually exploit a child. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to one count of attempting to communicate with a child via electronic means to facilitate sexual exploitation between 3 March and 6 May 2019, and a second charge of attempting to meet a child for sexual exploitation on 6 May 2019 at St Stephen's Green. Judge Martin Nolan found his actions "very wrong", noting that the man believed he was speaking to an 11‑ or 12‑year‑old child, but was actually communicating with members of the Child Protection Awareness Group posing as a child. He received a sentence of three and a half years, with the final two years suspended on strict conditions, and was ordered to be supervised by the Probation Service for two years after release.
