Murder accused tells own trial he was attacked on way home to 'wife and kids'
Summary
During his own murder trial, Andrew Lacey, 35, of Riverside, Loughlinstown, admitted he had initially lied to emergency services about being attacked by two men with knives. He claimed he was heading home to his wife and five children when he was confronted by Derek Reddin, 31, who he said was "nearly possessed" and struck him with a metal bat. Lacey said he tried to repel Reddin with a folding knife from his jacket, hoping to scare him away. He described a brief scuffle lasting five to ten seconds, after which both fell to the ground. Lacey denied knowing Reddin was dead at the time and denied that he had asked his friend what to say to the Gardaí. The trial is set to continue before Justice Mary Ellen Ring and a jury of eight men and four women. Andrew Lacey pleaded not guilty.
