Repeat offender jailed for trespassing

Summary

David Cooney, 44, of St Anthony's Road, Rialto, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty to trespassing with intent to commit theft at a house on the South Circular Road on 6 April 2022. He was found with a large shopping bag containing a Samsung tablet, perfume bottles and jewellery, items that matched those reported missing by the house's owner. Garda Fergal Burke, on mobile patrol, spotted Cooney in the Lotts Lane area at 9.15 pm, and after he hid behind a car and dropped the bag, the officers searched it and discovered the stolen items. Cooney was arrested and later sentenced by Judge Martin Nolan to eight months in prison, the maximum allowed under the law. He has 95 previous convictions and a history of addiction and mental‑health problems. The court heard that the offence was "very frightening" for the victims, who had found their dogs in the back garden and the house's interior disturbed.
